The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has clarified that Kenyans can file tax returns using their mobile phones, but only under specific conditions.
In a response to a user on X, KRA stated that filing taxes via a mobile phone is only possible for nil returns.
However, the authority said that Kenyan taxpayers must wait until after March 31 to start filing for nil returns.
“Yes, if you are seeking to file nil returns, then you can use your phone. But still, you have to wait until after March 31 to do so,” KRA stated.

However, the tax authority noted that individuals who are employed or running a business may find it difficult to file their returns through a mobile device due to the complexity involved.
“If you are employed or doing business, filing tax returns via mobile phone will be a challenge,” the authority added.
The authority was responding to a user on the platform who asked whether tax returns can be filed on the phone.
The clarification comes as Kenyans prepare for the annual tax filing season, with many seeking simpler and more accessible ways to comply with KRA requirements.
At the same time, the taxman has begun sending sms notifications to employed Kenyans on how to file returns more simply and faster.
The messages, sent largely on Thursday, March 19, revealed that KRA had officially rolled out a pre-filled return system that automatically captures employment income details.
According to KRA, individuals earning a salary will henceforth no longer need to manually input most of their income information when filing their annual returns.
With the timeline for tax filing expected to lapse on June 30, the taxman encouraged taxpayers to file their returns early and avoid a last-minute rush.
