Kenya Met Warns of Heavy Rains in Western, Rift Valley & 3 Other Regions This Weekend


The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned Kenyans in several parts of the country to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall for the next five days, from Friday, March 27, to Tuesday, March 31.

In its advisory issued on Friday, March 27, Kenya Met indicated that heavy rains were expected in Central Kenya, Western, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, and Northeastern Kenya.

Counties likely to experience significant rainfall in the Western region, Rift Valley, and Lake Victoria Basin include Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, and Trans Nzoia.

Others are Baringo, Uasin Gishu, and Elgeyo Marakwet, with similar conditions also expected in Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

In Central Kenya, counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, and Nairobi were forecasted to receive moderate rainfall over the next five days.

Kenya Met noted that most areas will experience sunny and cloudy intervals in the morning, followed by afternoon rains. 

In the Western region, the Rift Valley and Lake Victoria Basin, the downpours are likely to be accompanied by thunderstorms, with residents living in these areas warned of potential flooding.

A similar weather pattern was predicted in the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale as well as the Tana Delta, where rains were forecasted to be in moderate amounts.

While rains were predicted in most parts of the country, the weather department said that the South Eastern lowlands would remain sunny and dry for the next five days.

Temperature Advisory

Meanwhile, the meteorological department, in its weekend temperature advisory, warned of a very cold night in Central Kenya, where the temperature was projected to drop to 07°C.

Counties that were warned to brace for the cold nights include Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi and Nairobi.

On the other hand, Kenya Met said a daytime temperature of more than 30°C was expected in several parts of the country, including the Coast and North-eastern and North-western Kenya.
